The President’s 2001
US Energy Blueprint
What does it mean for the utility industry? |
PA Consulting Group (PA) has prepared this
analysis of the Bush administration’s US National Energy Policy (NEP),
released May 17, 2001. PA's initial conclusions are: Bush's National
Energy Policy is a balanced supply-demand analysis that focuses
heavily on infrastructure and new technologies. It includes a much
stronger focus on conservation and efficiency than expected and
recommends continuation of most low-income, efficiency and conservation
funding and tax incentives. There is also reference to energy security,
especially regarding the increase in oil imports.
The NEP elevates energy issues back into national debate and may produce
positive outcomes for the utility industry. It makes a positive and
substantial contribution to the US national energy debate, and should
raise energy issues to the same level currently held by environmental
concerns. Detailed report at

The Energy Factor
In Storage Technology |
Power crises, rolling
brownouts, and scheduled blackouts are a growing part of the IT
availability equation. The $2-3 trillion global IT industry would not
exist without reliable energy. The increasing speed and storage
densities demanded by the industry also increase power densities. For
example data centers often use more than 100 watts per square foot, more
than 10 times the density of the average office, driving the cost of
energy up as much as 25% annually and making it a growing consideration
in TCO (total cost of ownership) for computing equipment.Storage devices
occupy as much as 75% of the floor space in these computer centers,
making storage the biggest single load in the center.
Only a few new
technologies have been identified to address the energy consumption
problem. But solving the issue will encourage more aggressive use of
environmentally conservative storage solutions, such as removable media.
And, because much
stored data are infrequently used, storage solutions that consume less
energy than continuously spinning disk drives will become increasingly
important in data centers and workstation/PC applications..... posted 11

Portland’s Green Investment
Fund (GIF) |
Portland’s Green
Investment Fund (GIF), will now be supported by three city bureaus and
the Energy Trust of Oregon, Inc. Portland claims to be the only U.S.
city to offer financial incentives for development that employs
cutting-edge techniques for reducing resource and energy use in
construction and renovation projects.
Portland City
Commissioner Dan Saltzman created the GIF as a competitive grants
program designed to spur innovation in green building technologies and
practices. The Energy Trust announced that it will provide $750,000 to
the Fund. Combined with $1.75 million from the City of Portland’s Bureau
of Environmental Services, Water Bureau and Office of Sustainable
Development, this commitment will enable the Fund to provide a total of
$2.5 million in grants over the next five years.
The GIF was first
established in 2001 with a one-time $800,000 grant program to support a
wide range of commercial and residential green building projects. To
date the City has funded 74 projects totaling more than 1.7 million
square feet, ranging from large commercial and mixed use projects to
single family residences and affordable housing.....
